Opportunities for Experience
Students have many opportunities for hands-on experience in a wide range of public history activities. As well as the experience gained in the classroom and seminars, students participate in internships and community outreach projects. Appalachian State University students have interned with institutions such as the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Utah Children's Museum, the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, and the National Park Service. Students have worked on projects within the community such as the Watauga County Oral History Project, the Doc Watson Museum, and Historic Boone's campaign to preserve local historic landmarks.
Faculty actively assist students in locating and preparing for job opportunities. Our students have found jobs with the Winthurter Museum and Gardens, the Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives, the Gallilee Historic Homes, Biltmore Estate, the Ashe County Arts Council, and the National Park Service
