Housing

Participants will stay in Winkler Hall, in en suite-style room with private bedrooms for each participant and two-full baths per suite, with a shared common area and an unstocked kitchen. Participants may choose to share the suite with one other person or for a reduced rate with 2-3 others. Winkler Hall is smoke free as is the campus.  Meals for the entire week will be available with a campus meal plan included with the price of the room.  Several dining choices are available in Welborn Cafeteria including salads and vegetarian selections. Coin-operated vending machines are located in Winkler Hall. Laundry facilities are also available.  The hall is not air conditioned so a fan is recommended.  However, the High Country often cools down into the 50s and 60s at night so rooms are usually quite comfortable for sleeping.

Rates for the weeklong workshop will be $311 per person, in a suite with 3 or 4 person; $359 per person, in a suite with 2 persons.  The rates include 6 nights of lodging, 18 meals beginning with dinner on Sunday and concluding with lunch on Saturday, and a linen bundle consisting of two sheets, pillowcase, two washcloths, blanket, and pillow. If a Saturday night stay is needed because of travel arrangements it can be arranged for an additional $37 fee but food would not be included for that Saturday stay. Parking for the week is $10 per vehicle.  Residents will have free access to the internet Residents will also have access to the campus recreation center that contains weight and exercise equipment, 50-meter pool, and climbing wall for $5 fee (2007 rate) per use. The campus and town are walkable but a free bus system is available throughout the wider-Boone area.  The residence hall, library, and classrooms meet ADA requirements.  Participants should bring laptops. Dorm rooms are equipped with Internet connection and the classroom buildings are wireless. Computer labs on campus including in the library will be available as well.

There is no liquor by the drink in the county where Boone is located. Watauga County restaurants can only sell beer and wine except for the village of Blowing Rock, located about 10 miles from the campus.  An ABC store is located in Boone approximately 2 miles from campus as are a number of beer and wine package stores.

The Winkler Hall is named after the Winkler family of Boone, NC. Joshua Winkler first came to Watauga County in the spring of 1859 on his way to Kansas. After returning in the winter of 1862 he purchased land adjacent to that of Daniel Boone Dougherty, the father of B.B. and D.D. Dougherty. Eventually, James Winkler, son of Joshua, became one of the eight Trustees of Watauga Academy, now Appalachian State University.
