Graduate
The History Department's graduate program offers students advanced work in preparation for employment in community, junior and technical colleges; museums, archives, and other public venues (M.A. Public History); secondary schools (M.A. History/secondary Education); and business, government or further education (M.A. History).
Each degree requires between 30 and 36 hours of course work, depending upon whether or not the candidate writes a thesis. The department's graduate program emphasizes flexibility and a general approach to historical study while still permitting students to concentrate in particular geographical areas and times.
The department looks for students with an undergraduate degree in the liberal arts, not necessarily in history, but who have strengths in reading, writing and oral exposition. Consequently, we look for a strong undergraduate career, good scores on the Verbal section of the Graduate Record Exam, and strong letters of recommendation. We also request that applicants furnish an example of their writing ability.
Our graduates have had considerable experience in obtaining employment and admission to Ph.D. programs. Recent graduates are now working for the National Parks Service, the Oxford University Press, and at Old Salem. Others have been accepted to Ph.D. programs at the University of Chicago, George Washington University, and Oxford University.
