Assistantships
We receive a handful of Assistantships from the Graduate School each year. The stipend, which does not include a tuition waiver, is $3000 per semester. Normally these cover the full academic year, but renewal after one semester will depend on performance and the evaluation of the faculty mentor to whom the graduate teaching assistant is assigned. Preference is generally given to continuing students in good standing, but two or three may be reserved for promising first-year students. A student who has completed 18 graduate hours may be eligible to teach a section of World Civilization, although under faculty supervision. Most assistantships, however, require students to work with faculty members in a support role, helping with instructional tasks or individual faculty research.
Through consultation with the faculty member with whom you are working as a graduate assistant, you need to reach a clear agreement about your duties, which normally will amount to 20 hours of work per week. Meet regularly with the professor, and keep appointments faithfully. Always notify the faculty member in question if circumstances arise that preclude your keeping an appointment.
Look for announcements from the graduate advisor of application deadlines for assistantships.
