Ralph E. Lentz
I am a native of Watauga County and my family roots run deep into the past of Western North Carolina. My mother's family settled in present day Avery County in the late 1700s, and my father's family settled in Blowing Rock in the 1880s.
In 1922-23 my paternal grandmother attended Appalachian Training School and earned a teaching certificate. I transferred into Appalachian State University in 1992 from Caldwell Community College. In 1994 I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History (concentration in American History), and in 1998 I completed work for my Master of Arts degree. I have been a lecturer in the History department since 1998.
My rich family history has served as a wellspring for much of my historical research. My first book, (taken from my 1998 Master's Thesis), W. R. Trivett, Appalachian Pictureman, is based on the photographs and papers of my step-great-grandfather from Avery County, Willie Roby Trivett. I consider myself to be an "intellectual historian"-what interests me the most in history is how ideas and worldviews impact the way people live and act. Indeed, I believe that worldviews are the true motive forces in history and this is what I have devoted my studies to understanding.
